About this deal

Besides the warbands andterrain – we’ll get to those in a moment – the materials are all excellent, with sturdy tokens; heavy, matt cards; and pleasantly pastel-toned dice in the jungle colour theme. That format still works like a charm, and Heart of Ghur undoubtedly has everything you need to get it rolling. More specifically, in the box, you get:

So, yes. Currently, this is the closest thing that exists to a Warcry starter set. Whilst it’s not branded as such, what makes it so great for beginners is that it comes with a very well-written and concise rulebook that we’ll have a closer look at in a little while. It might be a bit on the expensive side for anyone completely new to the hobby, but, as we shall see, it’s a great box with plenty in it to keep everyone busy. Warcry: Red Harvest Review – Unboxing Both lanyards and desk mats will be available directly from the Games Workshop webstore and certain stores on Saturday the 29th of July.*

The two medium-sized sprues contain 10 models. As usual with Warcry, the models are monopose, but there are some alternative building options. We have a leader on a 32mm base, the Witherlord. There is also a Bloated One, also on a 32mm base, which can be built with either raker-claw and hooked net, or with dual raker-claws. The two Carrion Catchers come on 28mm bases and can be built with either snatcher-hooks or impalers. The remaining 6 models are Mirefolk Outcast, each model stands on a 25mm base and can be built with either dual bilewood weapons or a single weapon and shield. Each player controls a small warband (3-15 miniatures) fighting against the other players warband to control in a race to complete their mission. Warcry is a skirmish based wargame released by Games Workshop. It uses miniatures and lore from the Warhammer: Age of Sigmar setting. If you are familiar with Kill Team for Warhammer 40k, you will see quite some similarities.

The range ruler is pretty standard GW fare: clear, printed plastic – anyone with a Mortal Realms or Imperium submission will have seen these plenty of times before. The graphics printed on the ruler, however, do look to have been modified to reflect the Warcry theme. It’s just another small thing that makes the box feel that little bit more special. Cards Warcry’s original 2019 starter set came with the Iron Golems – a tankier warband of well-armed, metal-armoured, martial fighters wearing ornate masks – and the Untamed Beasts – a bunch of deadly, low-tech wilderness barbarians obsessed with killing in the name of chaos. The move characteristic of the fighter. This will mean how many inches the fighter can move with a move action. That each model manages to seem so disdainful and superior, and yet each be its own character is a fantastic example of just how excellent these models are. Prince Duvalle is more interested in his own hand than the act of iconoclasm he commits, foot arrogantly stamping on the head of a fallen statue. Gorath the Enforcer looks down his snub nose with equal command and disgust at his foes, leaning on his enormous hammer. Ennias Curse-born leers towards an unseen victim, wings spread, moments from a strike, the bestial savagery all vampires are capable off breaking through his haughty exterior, whilst Vellas von Faine, weapons drawn, is so assured of her imminent victory she has one blade at her shoulder, pose relaxed as she glares at whatever foe is approaching her. If you like what we’re doing here you could really help encourage more content with a share on any social media platform. A campaign system is also in place (a bit Mordheim style, but much lighter so do not get your hopes up). You can also spend 10 glory points to dominate territory. This basically gives you 50 more points to add to your warband. These can be used on thralls (the monsters in the starter set) or on more dudes. Options are cool, but the terrain cards assume you assemble in a specific way. This means that some people have assembled their terrain and afterwards they have a hard time following the cards included in the game. This is just a poor design choice.

A warband consisting of minimum 3 and a maximum of 15 models (either a warband or a box or two from an AoS faction). While the wall pieces line up nicely, for some reason the fences don’t, as Garfy found out when he started painting the models. Hopefully, we will get more Soulblight graveyard terrain in the same style soon with more wall and fence pieces so that more seamless combinations can be made. Crypt of Blood start here book & components But just where are you meant to battle? Don’t worry – we’ve got you covered there, too! The Terrain The first expansion for Warcry come out not very long after release. The “ Monsters and Mercenaries” book came out 7 September 2019, not very long after the initial release. This expansion was focused on adding a few extra allies, big monsters and other elements. Those rules are purely optional and very focused on campaign gaming (so no rules bloat yet). The runemark of the fighter. They are bit like keywords in Age of Sigmar, deciding what special abilities the fighter can use and what buffs can be used on them. You’ll still play through several rounds of combat, in which you and your opponent take turns activating one of your models, and doing two actions with it (move, fight, and so on). You’ll still roll six dice at the beginning of each round, making a note of multiples of any dice result, to spend those combos on special abilities that round. You can still climb up vertical terrain for bonuses, and you can still jump (or fall) off them for lolz. The issues in matched play, as well as the balancing between warbands, makes me believe that Warcry is NOT for very competitive matched play gamers. You will simply run into too many instances where you will feel like the game is “broken”. The Starter Set contains everything you need to play Warcry and is incredible value. It includes all the Warcry Essentials, along with the nice to haves and also an additional game board to play on and chaos beast miniatures. We’ll look at both the Iron Golems and Untamed Beasts in the faction discussions below, but both are great beginner warbands for Warcry. The Chaos Beasts from the Warcry Starter Set.

They may carry hammers and other tools of the forge, but the Horns of Hashut prefer destruction to creation. They harness the power of fire and leave nothing but charred corpses in their wake, just as Hashut demands.* We’ve got all sorts of wonderful articles for you next week on Warhammer Community. There’s another reveal for Cities of Sigmar and Necromunda, more miniatures for Legions Imperialis, alongside an interview with the Warhammer studio about designing tiny tanks for this new scale of battle, and plenty of excellent articles all about the best hobby in the world. What this really means: you can play Warcry on a much smaller space than a normal Age of Sigmar or 40k battle and you will need a lot less terrain to make it interesting. Warcry has a very interesting initiative system, where players all roll 6 dice each. Any doubles, triples or quads rolled by a player (2, 3 or 4 of the same number) are put to one side and can be used to activate powerful abilities for your warband. The player who rolls the most amount of unique numbers gains the initiative and gets to go first. Players also get a Wild Dice each turn, which they can use to add either another unique number to try and win the initiative, or to boost their existing dice to make a single a double, a double a triple or a triple a quad. Warcry has an interesting initiative system where dice are split between abilities and going first. It’s a real shame, actually. Everything else in the box – the cards, the tokens, and the book – are all really high quality. It’s quite surprising, then, that the mat in particular does not match up with everything else – especially when we see just how nice the miniatures in this set are, which we’ll get on to in a moment. Warcry: Crypt of Blood Starter Set Review – Miniatures The Warcry Monsters and Mercenaries Expansion Book adds rules for 11 new monsters and 50 new fighters that can be added to your Warcry warbands. The book is entirely optional and isn't essential to play, unless you want to add more options and depth to your campaign games. The Warcry Tome of Champions includes a huge amount of content for Warcry Games Warcry Tome of Champions 2019 You start the campaign by just playing a game against another warband in the campaign. After the battle there is an aftermath sequence where you gain and lose stuff: Each fighter that was not taken out gets to roll to see if they have gained the favour of the dark gods (or whatever they are after). On a six they gain a destiny level. 1 destiny level gives you the ability to reroll one dice used by that fighter in the game. Despite the faint sense of deja vu, however, there’s a lot to love about both sets of minis, including (jokes aside) some very cool visual personality.
