About this deal

Resolution (ISO-12233):We use a resolution chart based on ISO-12233 from Applied Image inc to indicate the limit of the camera’s vertical resolution at the centre of the frame. The higher the value, the better the detail resolution.

The OM System OM-5 was the first camera not to bear the Olympus logo, but it bleeds the technological legacy of the brand. Technically it's a successor to the Olympus OM-D E-M5 Mark III, but truthfully it has more in common with the flagship OM System OM-1– except where the OM-1 is built for advanced photographers, the OM-5 is built for adventurers. Olympus OM-D E-M1 series / OM-System OM-1: Sitting at the top of the pile are the ‘1’ designated cameras, which includes the Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III (and predecessors), the Olympus OM-D E-M1X and the newer OM-System OM-1. These are designed for professionals and advanced enthusiasts. With thoroughly weatherproof bodies, sophisticated stabilisation and advanced computational features like Starry Sky AF, they’re some of the best Micro Four Thirds cameras you can buy.iPhoneXSmax has two cameras with fixed lens at 26, 52mm equivalent, Oly's zoom power is 100mm equivalent. But you could use a 2x add on lens to reach that with your iPhone and keep much better IQ than the Oly. We test cameras both in real-world shooting scenarios and in carefully controlled lab conditions. Our lab tests measure resolution, dynamic range and signal-to-noise ratio. Resolution is measured using ISO resolution charts, dynamic range is measured using DxO Analyzer test equipment and DxO Analyzer is also used for noise analysis across the camera's ISO range.

Dynamic range (DxO Analyzer):This is a measure of a camera’s ability to capture detail in the highlights and shadows. We use DxO’s transmissive chart, which enables us to test a dynamic range of 13.3 stops. There are many scenarios in which a waterproof or rugged camera can help capture unique photos or video. Here are some tips to really make the most of those images.

Best used Olympus cameras

Focusing is nice and snappy and the LCD screen has fair visibility in bright light, with easy menu navigation. It's not a touchscreen, but then this isn't something we expect to see on underwater cameras. Which perhaps means that the E-PL series isn't done yet. The line saw annual (if incremental) updates every year from 2016 to 2019, culminating in the Olympus PEN E-PL10. These were consistently among the best-selling cameras in Japan and Asia, but that gangbusters business wasn't really replicated in the West. The OM-1 was a huge hit with reviewers and consumers alike, so the OM System era got off to a good start –but the OM-5 wasn't quite so warmly welcomed. Whether it's the OM-10 or PEN-F II7, whatever comes next will be crucial in cementing public perception of the brand. After the success of the ‘Olympus’ OM-1, the OM SYSTEM OM-5 represented the difficult second album. The revitalised brand had shown promise under its new hands, but consistency would be the key to seeing if there was a long-term future. Fears proved unfounded – the OM System OM-5 has turned out to be a delight and triumph. As a replacement for the E-M5 series, it represents the middle of the range, and so delivers a lightweight build with high-speed shooting, and comes at a significantly lower price than the OM-1.

Tip: Try to shoot in 'P' mode if you can, as the 'i-Enhance' color profile in Auto mode is over-the-top, to say the least. Olympus OM-D E-M10 series: The E-M10 cameras are Olympus’ entry-level option, cheaper and smaller than either the E-M5 or E-M1 models. While they aren’t weather sealed, they offer a lot of functionality for the price, and still produce great images. The latest in the series is the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV; we haven’t seen an OM-System successor yet, but when this arrives, we expect the OM-10 will be a familiar name to many.Olympus ‘Tough’ series: The odd one out in the family, Olympus’ Tough TG cameras are waterproof compacts with fixed zoom lenses and 1/2.3-inch sensors. They’re some of the most popular tough cameras out there, and the most recent OM System TG-7, and Olympus Tough TG-6 have a reputation for being one of the best you can buy. The E-M10 Mark IV is one of our favourite small mirrorless cameras, especially given that the MFT system is blessed with a terrific range of portable, high-quality lenses. If you’re looking for a travel-friendly mirrorless camera, it’s one of the best choices you can make. The Olympus Tough TG-6 is the company's sixth-generation premium underwater camera. It features a 12 Megapixel sensor, 4X optical zoom lens, numerous sensors and, of course, serious protection against the elements. Key specifications

One of the great features of the Tough TG-4 camera was its lens, which Olympus has kept for TG-5. The 4x optical zoom lens gives you a 35mm equivalent of 25-100mm. That should be flexible enough for most everyday situations, giving you scope to capture both lovely wide landscape vistas, and to zoom in to get closer to the action. Not only that, but at the widest point of the lens, it has a maximum aperture of f/2.0 – that’s super handy when shooting in lower light conditions, such as underwater. 3. Rugged credentials Other impressive features the E-M1 Mark III includes are a 4K movie shooting mode, 121-point superfast phase detection AF and an incredibly effective 5-axis in-body stabilisation. For those photographers whose profession takes them out and about such as wildlife and sport we also found the sturdy extensive weather sealed body to live up to its promise. Everyday shooters and parents who want something that can be dropped or get wet, unlike their smartphone The OM System OM-10 is the next camera expected to be announced. Following the transmogrification of the Olympus OM-D EM-1 and E-M5 to the OM System OM-1 and OM-5, now it's the turn of the Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark IV to be reborn. The Olympus E-PL10 is the upgrade to the E-PL9 and in all honesty there is little to distinguish the two although the image processor has been swapped to the faster TruePic VIII, which is found in many of Olympus higher end models. These days, new models seem to have vanished from the shelves, but you can generally find it for a decent price online. Look out for the E-PL9 too – it may be available even cheaper. Pro Capture mode saves photos before and after the shutter release is pressed, to help you capture the right moment So now, let’s get started with the best Olympus and OM-System cameras you can buy, for all users and budgets… Best OM-System and Olympus cameras in 2023
