About this deal

I suspect that for many scientists, who are used to seeing the parts of a system rather than the whole, this is a daunting task. This subject seemed strangely overlooked (particularly in the list of final practical recommendation points). This Dream Puppet journey to the Yaak Valley began a multi-year creative environmental project in eastern forests, Soils and Spirit. The connection between my illness and me was subjugated into silence for decades until the moment I felt connection to the water and asked, How can illness speak?

Yet I realize now that in that tearful longing a demand had slipped in, a wish of innocence for the terms of my historical and enculturated white body on this land to be something other than they are. Stephan Harding, a professor at Schumacher College, worked with James Lovelock and others on developing the Daisyworld model. so as to bring personality back into the world of rocks, atmosphere, water and living things, In this sense, the book is a contemporary attempt to rediscover anima mundi (the soul of the world) through Gaian science, whilst assuming no prior knowledge of science. This kind of embodied listening—where any claims to knowledge and authority by the listener are dissolved—is difficult. Some years later, after one of my performances about the reincarnating eugenics impulse in our culture and in ourselves, I bumped into an audience member on the street.

The film features interviews with leading environmentalists, scientists and spiritual leaders, including Brian Goodwin, Iain McGilchrist, Fritjof Capra, Vandana Shiva, Jules Cashford and Satish Kumar.

He believes that traditional mechanistic science has inadvertently fuelled the crisis and that we urgently need to develop an expanded science that cultivates intuitive wisdom alongside rational knowledge so that we can experience everything, from the smallest microbes to our planet’s great life-sustaining cycles, as deeply interconnected. This is the place where I first felt the deep relation between body, illness, and earth, where my disability and ecological consciousness first emerged, joined at the roots. I defy you not to be swept along by Stephan Harding's account of how the Earth's natural systems (particularly the carbon cycle) have evolved and of our part in them. It is not pleasurable, but it is a texture of my crip-time understory, and learning to listen to these textures forms the depths of what I know about what it means to be alive. She said she had watched with her adult son who had been evaluated since childhood as having “a very low IQ. A brave book which may upset people from both sides of the divide he seeks to bridge-which makes it all the more essential reading for those seeking to respond to the challenges of our times. Spend six days and nights hand-dyeing raw silk, falling in love with the alchemy of natural dyes that come from bugs, roots, flowers, and bark. Echoing older theorists, Harding suggests that Beauty is a “guide to right relationship with nature. Ideally, the right practice of art should produce as many saints as the practice of spirituality,” he says, in what may be my favourite unauthorised comment in the book, because of its explosive velocity against the cultural grain.
