Propane works when it gets cold. Unfortunately for Butane, the gas condenses when it gets cold and won't flow (no early morning brew!). So, if you are planning on any winter camping, propane gas is the only way to go. But if propane works all year round, why bother with butane? And secondly, it needs suitable fuel to be available in the first place. If it's wet, you're above the treeline, or you're in the middle of the desert this isn't going to do you much good. Having said that, most people reading this will be camping in Europe and North America where you're likely to be able to find plenty of fuel. Unlike many of the more expensive portable stoves, the Terra Hike comes with a Piezo (in-built) ignition. So you'll still be able to enjoy a hot cup of coffee even if you forgot the matches. When travelling through different countries, the ability to burn different types of liquid fuel is essential. In Europe and North America, it's pretty easy to find beautifully clean-burning white gas (AKA Coleman's). It's a lot harder to come by in the remote mountain villages of Guatemala though. And please do read the warning that follows. Some cheaper versions of these stoves can explode or set on fire. We’ve been getting a stream of scary stories from readers since posting Jim’s warning (see next). There is also a load limit of 3.6kg for food and pans. This is more than enough for a couple of people but not suited to larger groups. Below you'll find some specific recommendations for the best cooking stove for longer and short human-powered adventures. What do you want to cook? Your Campingaz cylinder should come with a carry handle that screws into the fitting where the cylinder goes. This not only makes the gas cylinder easier to carry but protects the fitting at the same time. Buying a longer-lasting model can be more expensive but is worth it if you're going to use it over the long term and is also better for the environment. Reliability You pay for the cylinder, and you pay for the gas in it. When it needs a refill, you exchange the empty cylinder for one already refilled. Getting a smart new stove, like the Campingaz 400 ST, is only part of the outlay, as you also have to buy a gas cylinder. If travelling abroad and burning petrol as your fuel, try to get some directly from the pump as opposed to a bottle / jerry can, which is likely to be mixed with other, cheaper alternatives. Not good when very windy / extreme weather Use for: fair-weather trips where allowed Solar gas stoves Pro's So a refill doesn't happen whilst you wait. Your cylinder is just swapped for one that's already been refilled.

Plus, propane cylinders are heavier, making butane easier to transport when you have lots of camping gear. The Biolite first captures heat from the fire. This heat is then converted into electricity through the thermoelectric generator. That electricity then powers the fan and supplies electricity to the USB charging port. Extra power charges up the internal battery so you can charge later too. Genius. Finally, this stove is cheap as chips so easy on the wallet, especially compared to some of the other stoves on the market.

Optional Extras:

Read the rest of this article to find out why and how to save a few pounds on buying a gas cylinder. Which is best for camping, Propane or Butane? The best single burner camping stove is the Campingaz Bistro. It's easy to use, has 2.2kW of power, comes with a Piezo ignition, is easily cleaned, and comes with an adjustable flame making it a great option for cooking a wide variety of food on. It also comes with a carry case. You'll usually need to buy the gas canister separately. Are camping stoves dangerous? Not needing to carry any fuel is a major bonus. If you've ever spilt fuel in your bag you'll really appreciate this. Campingaz make the Bistro. And there are lots of other brands that are nigh-on identical. There are also a lot of very cheap and potentially dangerous variants. You can also move the cylinder to hear the liquid gas moving around inside (remember, this is liquid petroleum gas), which gives you some idea of how much you have left.
